Megan K. DeFranza, PhD

Counselor, Author, Keynote Speaker, & Filmmaker,
helping people heal from harmful messages about
sex, gender, and sexuality, in
Christianity and American culture.

Informed, experienced, and gracious.

In the privacy of her counseling office (and virtually),
Megan works with couples and individuals
on journeys of personal, relationship, and sexual healing.

As a writer, speaker, and facilitator,
Dr. DeFranza combines careful scholarship with charitable conversations across differences.

DeFranza is a leading scholarly voice
critiquing traditionalist interpretations of the Bible
that have harmed women, LGBTQIA+, cis-gender and straight people;
advancing more inclusive, faithful, healthy biblical interpretations.

Her books on Christianity and biological sex differences (male, female, and intersex),
gender identity, and sexuality are used as textbooks in colleges and seminaries.
Understanding the power of stories, she elevated the voices of intersex people of faith
directing an award winning documentary,
and created an award winning video curriculum on Scripture and the new science of gender which combines documentary interviews with her own theological teaching.

Megan has a special gift for holding safe space for hard things—hard conversations, hard questions, and hard feelings. As a musician and lead singer in The Tidings — A Christmas Concert for Troubled Times (available on PBS stations nationwide), she guides audiences through the grief in the original nativity story so we can all experience deeper levels of joy, hope, and healing.

In every area of her life, Megan invites people onto the common ground of our shared humanity; working from the conviction that we are each beloved children of God, worthy of love, weary and wounded, yet capable of creating healthy changes to heal ourselves, our relationships, our communities, and the world.
